Learning how to study better is an ongoing process. It isn’t something that can be left until the night before a test. Below are 5 simple tips to help you study better. 

SET A STUDY SCHEDULE

It’s easy to say you’re going to study, but actually doing it is a different story. It can be challenging to get into the habit of studying, but if you want to do well in school, you have to make time for it. 

One way to make sure you stick to your study schedule is to set deadlines for yourself and put consequences in place if you don’t meet them. 

For example, tell yourself that you won’t watch TV until you’ve finished studying for the day. Or give yourself a monetary penalty for every hour of missed studying.

Whatever works for you, make sure that there are real consequences for not sticking to your study schedule!

GET ORGANIZED

• Invest in a good student planner. Those with pocket folders, dividers, and planning calendars are ideal. Keep separate folders for assignments, graded tests, home works, etc.

• Spend at least 15 minutes every day preparing your “To-Do List.” Doing so will help you stay on top of the tasks you need to accomplish the following day.

• Set up a study area that’s ideal for you. Get yourself a comfortable desk and chair that supports your back. Study away from TV, PlayStation, or any area of your home where you may be distracted.

TAKE BREAKS

A short break can do wonders. According to the science of studying, breaks can help improve your focus and memory for the next round of studying. 

So take a few minutes to yourself, step away from your work, and give your brain a chance to refresh. When you come back, you may find that you can focus better and get more done. 

Make sure that you don’t lose track of time during your breaks.

PRIORITIZE HEALTH

Lack of sleep and nutrition can all negatively affect your ability to concentrate. Drinking water and eating healthy are two great places to start. 

So next time you’re about to hit the books, make sure you have a big glass of water and a few nutritious snacks nearby. You’ll be surprised at how much better you’ll be able to study!

STAY POSITIVE

Everyone has those moments during their studies when they feel like giving up. It can be tough to stay motivated, but it’s worth it.

Consider rewarding yourself for each goal you reach, such as a quick game on the PlayStation, your favorite dessert, or anything that gets you excited. 

Reap your rewards as you meet your goals. This way, you will stay motivated throughout the year.
